Consult a health care practitioner if symptoms persist or worsen. Cascara sagrada must not be used beyond one week. The use of laxatives for longer than recommended can cause intestinal sluggishness, spasms and cramps. Potassium loss resulting from prolonged use of Cascara Sagrada may potentialize digitalis toxicity and arrhythmias when Cascara Sagrada is administered concomitantly with anti-arrhythmic drugs. Some chemical constituents of cascara sagrada are excreted via kidney. Consult a health care practitioner prior to use if you have kidney problems, or if you are taking heart medication such as cardiac glycosides or antiarrhythmic medications.

The concomitant use of other drugs that induce hypokalaemia, such as thiazide diuretics and adrenocorticosteroids may aggravate electrolyte imbalance. Consult a health care practitioner prior to use if you are taking thiazide diuretics, corticosteroids, licorice root or other medications or health products which may aggravate the imbalance of electrolyte levels.

Indomethacin may have its effect decreased when administered with Cascara Sagrada.

It is recommended not to associate Cascara Sagrada with other drugs except under medical supervision.

Consult a health care practitioner prior to use if you have faecal impaction or symptoms such as abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting or fever.

Reduce dosage or discontinue use if you experience abdominal pain, cramps, spasms and / or diarrhea.

Do not use Cascara Sagrada if you have abnormal constrictions of the gastrointestinal tract, a potential or existing intestinal blockage, atonic bowel, appendicitis, inflammatory bowel disease such as Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis, abdominal pain of unknown origin, undiagnosed rectal bleeding, severe dehydration with depleted water or electrolytes or diarrhea.

Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Hypersensitivity may occur. Abdominal spasms and irritation of the colon may  be observed following the use of Cascara Sagrada.
